Every summer, many Israelis escape the searing heat by bathing in the cool fresh waters of the Sea of Galilee. In Hebrew, the name for the Sea of Galilee is Yam Kinneret יָם-כִּנֶּרֶת. This name comes from the Hebrew word for lyre: kinnor. Similar to a harp, this is a musical instrument which consists of ten strings stretched inside an oval frame. The oval shape of the lake reminded people of the shape of a kinnor, and its refreshing breezes reminded them of the pleasing sound of the kinnor. Hence the name Kinneret was born!
