A sea with healing soundsLearn Hebrew online

Every summer, many Israelis escape the searing heat by bathing in the cool fresh waters of the Sea of Galilee. In Hebrew, the name for the Sea of Galilee is Yam Kinneret יָם-כִּנֶּרֶת. This name comes from the Hebrew word for lyre: kinnor. Similar to a harp, this is a musical instrument which consists of ten strings stretched inside an oval frame. The oval shape of the lake reminded people of the shape of a kinnor, and its refreshing breezes reminded them of the pleasing sound of the kinnor. Hence the name Kinneret was born!

In the days of the Bible, the most famous lyre player in the Land of Israel was King David. With his sweet melodies, David soothed the nerves of the hostile King Saul. Do you too seek the healing sounds of the kinnor? If coming to Israel to actually swim in the Sea of Galilee is not possible, why not try the next best thing?
