"Zion" in modern Hebrew
The word “Zion” (Tzion) comes from the root צ-י-ן in Hebrew. In modern Hebrew we have a lot of verbs coming from this root. For example: “letzayen” which means “to mark something” or “to emphasize something”. In fact, in Modern Hebrew when a student brings home a grade/mark from his school he brings back home – Tziun.
"Zion" in Biblical Hebrew
At the beginning it was a nickname for Jerusalem:
• (חֲזֵה צִיּוֹן קִרְיַת מוֹעֲדֵנוּ, עֵינֶיךָ תִרְאֶינָה יְרוּשָׁלִַם נָוֶה שַׁאֲנָן." (ישעיהו לג כ"
“Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts; Your eyes will see Jerusalem” (Isaiah 33:20)
And later it appears in the bible as nickname for Israel:
• (וְלָקַחְתִּי אֶתְכֶם אֶחָד מֵעִיר וּשְׁנַיִם מִמִּשְׁפָּחָה וְהֵבֵאתִי אֶתְכֶם צִיּוֹן." (ירמיהו ג יד"
"Return, faithless people,” declares the LORD, “for I am your husband. I will choose you—one from a town and two from a clan—and bring you to Zion.” (Jeremiah 3:14)
